Chess has a long and storied history that dates back nearly 1,500 years. It originated in northern India during the Gupta Empire, where it was known as “Chaturanga,” a game that represented four divisions of the army: infantry, cavalry, elephants, and chariots. Over the centuries, chess spread to Persia, where it became known as “Shatranj,” before reaching Europe and evolving into the game we know today. At Ancient Chess Academy, we celebrate this rich history and use it as a foundation for our teaching methods. Understanding the evolution of chess helps players appreciate the game’s complexity and cultural significance. Our courses often include fascinating historical insights, allowing students to connect with the game on a deeper level.
